When I landed at Istanbul Airport, I knew I wanted a quick and affordable way to get to the city without dealing with chaotic traffic or spending a fortune. That’s when I discovered the Istanbul Airport to city metro, and honestly, it turned out to be the best choice for me.
Finding the Istanbul Airport to City Centre Metro Station at Istanbul Airport
The Istanbul Airport metro station is really easy to find. After I got through customs, I just followed the signs for “Metro” or “U”. It’s all super well-marked, so you won’t get lost. The entrance to the metro is opposite exit 11 of the arrivals hall.
I had to walk around 10 minutes down a long passageway. There are moving walkways, so it’s not a problem to get around even with a lot of luggage or a stroller.
Above the walkway, there are screens with the Metro M11 line schedule. The M11 line is the metro line from Istanbul Airport to the city.
At the end, you have to go down three levels to the Metro Turnstyle Hall. I decided to take the elevator instead of the escalator.
How to Start Your Travel by Istanbul Airport Metro to City : Buy Istanbulkart and Top It Up
On the level of Metro Turnstyle Hall are vending machines where you can buy Istanbul Kart and top it up.
The Istanbul Kart is a refillable card that is used for all public transportation in Istanbul. I had two Istanbul cards from previous trips, so I just needed to top them up. In the meantime, I noticed that one of the cards was no longer usable.
The ticket vending machines in Istanbul are very easy to use. They have menus in several languages, including English. You can pay in cash, with a debit or credit card, or with a contactless device. I topped up my card several times and wasn’t always able to use contactless with my phone. I had no problems with the other two payment methods.
How much money to put in the Istanbul card? The ride on the M11 line from the airport to Gayrettepe is 53,23 Turkish Liras (TL) and from Gairettepe another metro ride is 27 TL. Top the Istanbulkart up with 200 TL, as it is basically your all-access pass for public transport in Istanbul and you will most probably be using it further.
Getting on the Metro from Istanbul Airport
The metro line from Istanbul Airport to the city is the M11 line, and it’s brand new, so everything feels clean and modern.
I got on the train and just relaxed. The trains are air-conditioned and run every 8–10 minutes, so I didn’t have to wait long.
The M11 took me to Gayreteppe station.
From there, I switched to the M2 line to head to Taksim Square, where I’d booked my hotel.
The whole process was smooth— I just followed the signs for the connecting line, and I was fine. It’s all super organized and easy to figure out.
Where Does the Istanbul Airport Metro Go in the City?
The metro is great because it connects you to a bunch of important places in the city. From Gayrettepe station, you can hop on other lines to get to:

For me, the ride to Taksim was quick and comfortable, and it didn’t feel like it took long at all. Plus, skipping traffic made it so much better.

While I haven’t personally used it from Istanbul Airport to the city, I did take the Havabus shuttle from Taksim to Sabiha Gökçen Airport (SAW), and it was a smooth and comfortable experience. Both shuttles pick up and drop off at the same convenient location in Taksim Square.
HAVAIST shuttle buses offer 12 routes connecting IST Airport to the city and to Sabiha Gökçen Airport Airport (SAW).
