I will examine the various transportation methods available to help you make a well-informed choice that aligns with your preferences.
Sofia’s public transport system is robust and efficient, providing an economical means of navigating the city. Sofia metro is a favored option for travelers, as it offers a direct and reliable link between the airport and the city center. Additionally, buses and taxis are readily accessible.

If you prioritize your privacy and ease of travel, private transfer services are a fantastic option. These services provide a door-to-door experience, helping you steer clear of the stress of using public transport or trying to get a cab.
Moreover, car rental services are accessible at the airport, granting you the flexibility to discover Sofia and its nearby areas at your leisure.

Getting From The Airport To The City Center By Metro

Taking the Metro from Sofia Airport is the most favored, dependable, efficient, and budget-friendly method to travel to the city or to get to Sofia Airport. It offers a direct link between the airport and various important locations within the city.
The metro line that serves the airport is M4, and the Sofia Airport metro station is only a short walk from Terminal 2. Upon exiting the Sofia Airport Terminal 2 building, turn left, and you will find the metro station directly ahead.
All major airlines, along with the budget carrier Ryanair, operate flights to and from Sofia Airport Terminal 2. Meanwhile, all charter and low-cost flights, excluding Ryanair, take off from Terminal 1.
Metro line M4 trains run from 5:30 AM until midnight, with an average frequency of 5-10 minutes during peak times and 10-15 minutes during off-peak hours. The ride from the airport to the city center takes approximately 25-30 minutes, depending on your final destination.

Serdika station is located in the heart of Sofia. Other metro stations situated in the city center include NDK, Sofia University, and Sveti Patriarh Evtimiy. You can access a map of the Sofia metro lines here.
If you land at Sofia Airport Terminal 1, taking the metro may not be the most convenient choice. A complimentary shuttle bus service operates around the clock, every 30 to 40 minutes, between Sofia Terminal 1 and Sofia Airport Terminal 2. From there, you can take the metro to reach your final destination.
However, when I need to leave from or arrive at Terminal 1, I always prefer a taxi ride.

Getting By Bus From The Airport To The City Center

Besides the metro, Sofia features several bus routes that link the airport to different areas of the city. Although the buses may take a bit longer than the metro, they can be a more convenient choice for travelers heading to locations not directly accessible by the metro system.
Bus routes 84 and 184 connect the city center to Sofia Airport. Route 84 terminates at Terminal 2, while route 184 follows the same path and continues on to Terminal 1. Buses depart from Terminal 2 from 5 am until just before midnight, with the last bus leaving at 11:42 pm. For bus line 184, the first bus departs from Terminal 1 at 5:11 am, and the final bus leaves at 10:50 pm.
It’s worth mentioning that Sofia’s public transportation is generally safe and reliable, but it’s wise to stay aware of your surroundings and be aware of your belongings.

How To Pay For Public Transport In Sofia

You have the option to purchase individual tickets or choose the reloadable Sofia City Card, which provides reduced fares and eliminates the need to carry cash. Tickets are available at vending machines within the metro station or from ticket counters located inside the metro stations.

A single ticket is priced at 1.60 BGN (approximately 0.80 EUR) when bought from a ticket machine (cash only) or a ticket booth. If you purchase it directly from the driver (cash only), the cost is 2.00 BGN (1 Euro). You are allowed to bring up to two pieces of luggage for free; however, for any additional luggage, you will need to buy an extra ticket.
The city center of Sofia is small and easy to navigate on foot, so you may not need to rely heavily on public transportation. Therefore, I wouldn’t recommend getting the Sofia City Card.

Don’t be concerned if you lack cash in Bulgarian Lev. You can use a contactless Visa, Mastercard, or Maestro credit or debit card to pay for public transport in Sofia. Please note that AMEX is not accepted.
Make sure to have your bank card or smartphone with a digital wallet ready for the blue machines at the metro station barriers. For buses and trams, validate your card at the blue validators located near each vehicle door. This ticket type enables transfers within a 30-minute window.

Taxi From Sofia Airport To City Center

Taxis are a favored option for traveling from Sofia Airport to the city center. The taxi company Yellow! serves as the official partner of Sofia Airport. In the arrivals sections of both Terminal 1 and Terminal 2, visit the Yellow! taxi counter to request a taxi.
In the past, unlicensed and unmetered taxis used to operate in the arrival areas or outside the airport, charging travelers excessively. This was a common issue years ago, but it’s likely not a problem now; however, it’s always best to exercise caution. Therefore, avoid using taxi services that are offered outside the designated taxi counter.
One of the benefits of using a taxi is the convenience of door-to-door service. Taxis can take you straight to your hotel or chosen location, eliminating the need to navigate public transit or haul your luggage through the city. Moreover, taxis are typically a more comfortable choice compared to public transportation, especially if you have a lot of luggage or are traveling as part of a group.

Regarding the pricing of taxi services in Sofia, the standard fare from the airport to the downtown area usually falls between 10 and 15 euros, varying based on the distance traveled and the time of day. If you lack cash in Bulgarian leva, you can settle the payment using a credit or debit card.

Using Ridesharing Services In Sofia

Uber and Bolt are illegal in Bulgaria. There is another rideshare option available: the TaxiMe app. However, I would highly recommend avoiding it. The vehicles often lack cleanliness, and the drivers tend to engage in reckless driving.
As I previously mentioned, I reside and drive in Sofia, so I’m accustomed to the somewhat disorderly traffic conditions here.

Car Rental At Sofia Airport

If you value the freedom and flexibility of discovering Sofia and its surroundings at your own pace or going to the Black Sea coastrenting a car from the airport could be a great choice. Sofia Airport hosts a range of car rental companies, giving you the opportunity to select a vehicle that suits your requirements and preferences.
One of the key benefits of renting a car is the convenience of traveling directly to your destination without having to navigate public transportation or depend on taxis or ride-sharing services. This can be particularly advantageous if you intend to visit several sites or venture beyond the city center.
Regarding the cost of renting a car at Sofia Airport, prices can fluctuate based on the size of the vehicle, the duration of the rental, and any extra features or insurance options you decide to include. It is advisable to compare rates from various rental agencies and reserve your vehicle ahead of time to guarantee availability and possibly obtain more favorable prices. You can find multiple rental car companies located at both Terminal 1 and Terminal 2. I suggest considering the services of Top Rent-a-car; check their pricing first before making any other reservations.
Keep in mind that navigating Sofia can be difficult for those visiting for the first time, as traffic can be quite heavy, particularly during rush hours. Furthermore, parking in the downtown area may be scarce and costly.
If you choose to rent a car at Sofia Airport, make sure to thoroughly read the rental agreement, comprehend the insurance coverage, and get acquainted with the vehicle’s features before you start driving. This will help you prevent any unforeseen problems, extra fees, or surcharges throughout your rental period.

Private Transfers From Sofia Airport To City Center

If you seek a more structured and stress-free mode of transportation, a private transfer from Sofia Airport to the city center is an outstanding option. One of the key benefits of opting for a private transfer is the level of convenience it provides. You can easily arrange your transfer ahead of time and rest assured that you will be picked up punctually at the airport. This can be especially advantageous if you are carrying a considerable amount of luggage or traveling with children.
Regarding the pricing of private transfers, costs can fluctuate based on the service provider, the number of passengers, and the particular location within the city.
