Just a kilometer from Pomorie is the largest domed tomb discovered in Bulgaria, known as the Kuhata Mogila (Hollow Mound).
It dates back to the II-IV century and is located under a mound in the necropolis of Anchialos. It is supposed that the structure served as a tomb of a rich Thracian family, and religious rituals were performed there.
The tomb consists of a corridor (dromos) 22 m long and a circular chamber almost 12 m in diameter and five and a half meters high. It is built of stone (used by the Thracians) and bricks (typical of Roman construction). In the center of the chamber is a hollow column more than 3 meters in diameter, which widens at the top and merges with the outer wall. On the inner wall of the column, there are traces of steps leading to an opening at the top. Along the walls of the chamber, there are five niches where the urns of the deceased are thought to have been placed. No bones or urns were found during the tomb’s exploration, the likely explanation being that it had been looted previously.
