What Is The End Of The World Train?
The End of the World Train has a fascinating past. It was built in the early 1900s as the prison train Ushuaia. Once the train was used to transport the prisoners from the prison in the center of Ushuaia to the slopes of Susana Mountain. The prisoners obtained stones and wood for the construction industry. You will learn their story onboard the train. It is narrated in several languages.
The narrow-gauge railway, winding through the wild landscapes of Tierra del Fuego National Park, was an essential part of the region’s development, providing resources for the growing town.
Today, this historic railway has been transformed into a popular tourist attraction. Now, the train to Tierra del Fuego National Park offers a scenic journey through some of the most stunning and remote parts of the world. The train comprises a few panoramic cars and a steam engine.
What To Expect On The End Of The World Train
The End of the World train route recreates part of the old route. Its first stop is located just 8 km away from Ushuaia. The train is a steam train, consisting of a couple of panoramic carriages and a steam engine. The starting point of the train journey is the End of the World station.
The second stop is at Macarena Waterfall station and the final destination is the National Park station. You can board the End of the World train as a part of a Tierra del Fuego National Park tour. If this is the case, a coach will be waiting for you at National Park station. When you disembark the train, you will continue with the tour through the Tierra del Fuego National Park.
If you have come to the train by yourself (by taxi or remis), you have two options. One is to return with the same train or you can join a later train back, just advise the staff. You will have some time to hike around the park.
The End of the World train takes one hour each way and a further 45 minutes on the return journey. The return journey doesn’t include a stop at Macarena Waterfall Station, hence the time difference.
A couple of guys dressed like prisoners entertain the tourists while they wait to board the train at The End of the World station. You will be photographed with them on the platform with the train in the background.
At the End of the World Station, there is also: a gift shop (very overpriced, better buy your souvenirs in any gift shop in Ushuaia), a café with some food and drinks, and toilets.
Is The End Of The World Train Worth It? Pros and Cons
When considering whether the End of the World Train is worth it, there are definite pros and cons to weigh. On the plus side, the train ride offers unparalleled scenic views of the Tierra del Fuego wilderness, with breathtaking rivers, waterfalls, and forests all around you.
However, there are a few potential downsides to consider. In my opinion, the cost is a bit steep for the relatively short ride of just 7 kilometers. Even in the off-season, the train can be crowded. Things get even worse if you are unlucky enough to coincide with cruise ship groups. You may find yourself waiting in long lines or in a bit of a rush to get a good seat.
How To Get To The End Of The World Train: Tours
The train is 8 kilometers away from the city of Ushuaia. You can get to the End of the World Train station by taxi, a rental car, or by public transportation.
For an enriched experience, consider opting for End of the World Train guided tour packages. These comprehensive tours often combine the scenic train ride with a Tierra del Fuego National Park tour, offering insights into the region’s history and natural beauty.
I consider the most time-effective way to get to the End of the World train to be a tour. Tours are affordable, and convenient and give the opportunity to explore further the Tierra del Fuego National Park after riding the End of the World train.
If you don’t have a whole day in Ushuaia to spend in the Tierra del Fuego National Park, opting for a half-day guided tour can be a fantastic way to get to know the best places in Tierra del Fuego National Park. You will have the other half of the day to engage in other activities.
Tierra del Fuego National Park tours are one of the best things to do in Ushuaia. The tour company will pick you up from your accommodation in Ushuaia. At the end of the tour, they will drop you off either at your hotel or in downtown Ushuaia, depending on your preferences. Our tour guide was kind enough to recommend places to eat in Ushuaia, that are frequented mainly by the locals.
What To Expect From The End of the World Train Tour
The first stop of the tour will be The End of the World Station. It is the first stop on the End of the World (Fin del Mundo in Spanish) Train route.
If you have taken a tour but are not boarding the train, you will have some time to buy a drink or a snack. Afterward, you will board a coach or a mini-van and continue your journey to the National Park Station. There, you will meet with your fellow travelers who have taken the train.
How Much Is The End Of The World Train Ticket Price?
If you’re interested in taking the train, you’ll need to purchase the End of the World Train tickets separately since they’re not included in the tour price.
The tickets come in various categories and classes with different prices. Some of them offer food and beverages. It’s up to you to decide whether it’s worth it. Keep in mind that the train ride lasts around an hour over a distance of 7 km.
The End of the World Train ticket price for adult foreigners is as follows: from October to December ARS 62,000 for the tourist class and ARS 140,000 for the premium class. From January to April, the prices are ARS 68,000 for the tourist class and ARS 155,000 for the premium class. Kids up to three years old ride for free and those from 4 to 12 years old pay half the adult price.
Some of the perks of premium class are priority boarding, food and drinks onboard, and an End of the World Train souvenir as a gift.
You can pay for the End of the World train ticket by cash (US dollars and EUR are also accepted) or credit or debit card.
💡: It’s important to purchase also the entrance ticket to the National Park, or else you may not be permitted to board the train. The Tierra del Fuego National Park entrance ticket price is ARS 30,000. Only cash is accepted!
Once you board the train and enter the Tierra del Fuego National Park, you won’t have another chance to buy a ticket to enter the park.
TIP: When buying tickets for the End of the World train don’t forget to pay (cash only!) the entrance fee for the Tierra del Fuego National Park or you’ll be denied boarding.
Final Verdict: Should You Ride the End of the World Train?
When it comes to whether or not you should ride the End of the World Train, it really depends on your travel preferences.
Based on my personal experience, I think the End of the World train ride is worth it, even if you only have a couple of days in Ushuaia. Think about it: when else are you going to travel to the end of the world by train? If you’re traveling with kids and looking for things to do in Ushuaia with kids, the End of the World train should be on top of your must-do list.
